When does my account become delinquent?
Your account becomes delinquent immediately if payment is not received at the utility office by the due date printed on your bill (the 4th Monday of each month).
An account is considered delinquent the moment payment has not been received by the due date printed on the bill. The due date is the 4th Monday of each month.
Delinquency timeline:
- Bill mailed: Monthly, for the prior month’s service
- 4th Monday: Due date. Payment must be received by this date
- Day after the due date: Account becomes delinquent
- 25 days after the due date: Utility may begin discontinuation proceedings
What doesn’t prevent delinquency:
- Not receiving a bill (you’re still responsible)
- Payment postmarked by due date but received late
- Declined check, credit card, or automatic bank draft
- Failure to receive a delinquent notice
Exceptions to delinquency: If you’ve notified the utility of a disputed item on your bill and withheld payment in accordance with the complaint procedure, the disputed amount will not be considered delinquent until the dispute is resolved or abandoned.
For more information, see Can I dispute a charge on my bill? and How do I file a complaint about my water service?
Consequences of delinquency:
- Account may be referred to collections
- Service may be discontinued (with proper notice)
- Collection costs may be added to your balance
- Credit reporting may be affected
What to do if your account is delinquent: Contact the utility immediately to arrange payment or discuss payment plan options. If you’re unable to pay, see What if I can’t pay my bill on time?
