What is a water main?

A water main is the primary distribution pipe that carries water through the utility’s service area. These pipes are typically a minimum of 6 inches in diameter and are usually installed in streets, roads, alleys, or utility easements running approximately parallel to roadways.

Key points about water mains:

• Water mains are owned and maintained by the utility
• Your service connection taps into the water main to bring water to your property
• They’re typically located in public rights-of-way or utility easements
• The utility is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and extending water mains
• You must have a water main adjacent to your property to be eligible for service

If you need water service extended to a new area where no water main exists, you may need to petition for a main extension. This requires signatures from 2/3 of the property owners who would benefit from the extension, and costs are typically borne by the petitioners through direct payment or special assessments.
