What is a service connection?

A service connection is the pipe and appurtenances (equipment) that extends from the utility’s water main to the keybox, which is normally located at your property line. This is the utility-owned and utility-maintained portion of your water service infrastructure.

Key points about service connections:

• The utility is responsible for maintaining and repairing service connections
• Typically, one service connection serves one parcel (property)
• The service connection ends at the keybox - everything beyond that point (toward your house) is your responsibility
• New service connections require a permit and inspection
• The size of your service connection affects your water rates

Understanding where the service connection ends and your service extension begins is important because it defines the boundary of maintenance responsibility. The utility maintains the service connection; you maintain the service extension from the keybox to your building.
