How much is the fee for unauthorized turn-on?
The unauthorized turn-on/turn-off fee is $200. If service was discontinued and you turn it back on yourself, the utility may disconnect your service at the main without notice.
WARNING: Only authorized utility personnel may turn water service on or off. If you or anyone else turns your water on or off without utility authorization, you will face significant financial penalties and potential service disconnection.

What happens if you turn water on yourself after discontinuation
If your service has been discontinued and you (or another unauthorized person) turn the keybox back on:
- You will be charged $200 for unauthorized turn-on/turn-off
- The utility may disconnect your service at the main without notice
- You will be charged for all water used during the unauthorized period at regular rates
- You will be charged the actual cost for labor and materials to disconnect at the main
Why disconnection at the main is serious
Disconnection at the main is much more serious than discontinuation at the keybox. To restore service after disconnection at the main, you must:
- Submit a new connection permit application
- Submit a new water service application
- Pay ALL outstanding charges, including the $200 fee, disconnection costs, and reconnection costs
This process is much more expensive and time-consuming than simply paying to have the utility turn your service back on properly.
