I'm a landlord - can I have my tenant billed directly?
Yes, the utility can bill the tenant directly upon your request. You (the landlord) will receive copies of all delinquent billing notices that contain turn-off warnings.
You can choose to have water service billed in the tenant’s name or in your name as the landlord.
If you want the tenant billed directly
How to set it up:
- Request that the utility bill the tenant directly
- The tenant must submit an application for water service
- The tenant provides required information and deposit
- Service is established in the tenant’s name
What you need to know:
- The tenant becomes the customer and receives all bills
- The tenant is responsible for payment
- You (the landlord) will receive copies of any delinquent billing notices that contain a written turn-off warning
If you are the customer and violate the tariff
If the landlord is the customer and violates a tariff rule that requires service disconnection, both the tenant and landlord will receive notice.
When the utility may require landlord billing
The utility may require you to place the service in your name (as the landlord) if there is a history of delinquent tenants at the property.
When a tenant moves out
The tenant must provide at least 5 business days written notice to stop service. See How much notice do I need to give to stop my water service? for details.
