Cloudy or milky-looking water can be concerning, but it’s usually harmless and safe to drink. Understanding the cause can help you determine if action is needed.
Most common cause - Air bubbles:
The most frequent cause of cloudy water is tiny air bubbles, which occur when:
- Water pressure changes in the pipes
- Cold water enters your plumbing system
- Maintenance or repairs have been performed on the water system
- There are temperature differences between outside pipes and indoor plumbing
How to identify air bubbles:
- Fill a clear glass with water
- Set it on the counter and wait 1-2 minutes
- If the cloudiness clears from bottom to top, it’s air bubbles (harmless)
- If it stays cloudy or settles to the bottom, contact us for investigation
Other potential causes:
- Sediment - May appear after water main work or high-flow events
- Hard water minerals - Calcium and magnesium are not health concerns
- Cold water phenomenon - More common in winter months
