Do I need a water meter?

New structures that need meters:

Meters are required for:

• New buildings with commercial units
• When the utility determines the commercial flat rate is unfair

Existing properties - utility can require meters:

The utility can require you to install a meter by giving you written notice. This applies to:

• Existing multi-family dwellings
• Existing commercial buildings
• Homes with a business or home occupation if the utility determines it will increase water demand

The notice will tell you the deadline for installing the meter. The utility may inspect your property to determine the meter size needed. Meter size is based on how much water you’ll use, not your service line size.

Commercial customers can request meters:

If you’re a commercial customer, you can ask for metered service in writing. You’ll pay all costs for meter installation and inspection.

If you don’t install a required meter:

If you don’t install a meter when required, the utility may discontinue your water service after giving you 30 days written notice. Service stays off until you install the meter. The utility won’t adjust your billing if you fail to install a required meter.
