Do I need to maintain the keybox on my property?
Yes. You need to know where your keybox is located and keep it accessible. You'll pay for any costs if it's damaged due to your negligence or if you don't tell contractors, landscapers, or others where it is.
The keybox provides access to the valve that controls water flow to your property. While the utility owns the equipment inside, you’re responsible for protecting the keybox and keeping it accessible.

Your responsibilities:
You must know where your keybox and thaw wire are located. You’ll pay the utility’s costs for locating or repairing them if damage happens because of:
- Your negligence
- Negligence by people working on your property
- You didn’t tell people working on your property where the keybox is located
Make sure to tell landscapers, contractors, snow removal services, and anyone else working on your property where your keybox is located.
What you’ll be charged:
- If the keybox needs repair before the utility can shut off your water: actual repair costs (Section W-011)
- Keybox locate service: $122 (business hours) or $172 (non-business hours) - Section W-027.6
